Sustaining Dunbar is investigating how to set up a car club/ car sharing sydicate here in Dunbar. There are lots of options for how this might work, so if you’ve got any ideas or would like to find out more, then come along to our first meeting at 7pm on Thursday 29th July in the Be Green/Sustaining Dunbar office, 16 West Port.

Late train home from Edinburgh Festival

East Coast has confirmed that they will be running a 23:45 train from Edinburgh to Dunbar and Berwick on Friday and Saturday nights during August and also on Fri 3, Sat 4 and Sun 5 September. Print out this handy reminder to keep with your Sustaining Dunbar Train and Bus Timetable.

Bike Recycling

The 2nd-hand bike sale at Dunbar Primary School Fair on Saturday was a great success with over 30 bikes re-homed and nearly £100 donated to school funds. We’ll be doing it again next year, so if you want to make some money from your old bike, bring it along next June. On the other hand, if you just want to make space in the garage, The Bike Station in Edinburgh will collect old bikes from your house. Call them on 0131 668 1996 to arrange an uplift.

Scotrail Trains for Dunbar!

Four new daytime trains will run to and from Dunbar and Edinburgh starting from Monday. There will also be a 2208 service back from Edinburgh on Monday to Thursday to complement the existing 2317 Friday night service. The trains will be operated by Scotrail and we hope that if they are well used, then the service will be expanded further.

Fill That Hole!

Potholes and road defects are more than just a nuisance; they’re a danger to cyclists and other road users. Local councils have a duty to ensure roads are maintained, but if they don’t know about a pothole, they can’t fill it in. So if you want to get it repaired, you have to report it. CTC, the UK’s national cyclists’ organisation have set up a website, www.fillthathole.org.uk, to allow members of the public to easily report potholes and road hazards.

Dunbar Cycle Rides

Sustaining Dunbar is looking for people to lead local cycle rides this summer. They could be sociable or serious – short picnic trips for families or longer tours – it all depends on who wants to come! Local Car Hire

Sustaining Dunbar believes there is a need for both short and long term car hire in Dunbar to reduce the need for families to run more than one car. Having a hire option available would mean that individuals can run a more efficient car which suits their day-to-day needs, but could hire a bigger car when necessary. Members of Sustaining Dunbar can now qualify for a 10% discount on car hire from Ian Glass, Haddington – Car rental from £24.95 /day. Just let them know that you are a member when you book your car, rental from £24.95/day.

Want to reduce your carbon footprint and save money? Tripshare East Lothian is a free journey matching service to put you in touch with people going the same way as you. You can register regular commutes to work or occasional trips away, and the website allows you to search for other members who are doing similar journeys at similar times. There are already 60 members in Dunbar and 530 in East Lothian, but the more people that join in, the more chance you have of finding a matching journey. So tell your friends!

Leave the car at home?

Sustaining Dunbar presents an evening discussion on transport options for the future, on SATURDAY 27 FEBRUARY at 7PM in the GIBB ROOM, DUNBAR LIBRARY. There will be a short documentary which questions whether we can keep on driving as oil prices rise, followed by a chance to air your thoughts on how we can make Dunbar a better place for people on foot, bikes, buses and trains

The discussion will be followed at 8.30pm by a meeting of Sustaining Dunbar’s Transport Group which has been working for two years to improve walking, cycling and public transport in and around Dunbar.
