Please do take a look at this draft of the East Lothian Environment Strategy which is now out for consultation -until 27th August.

We have been participating in the East Lothian Environment Forum which has worked with East Lothian Council to draft this policy. It is pretty concise and readable so please do take this opportunity to read and comment on it. It will play an important role in the shaping policy at the East Lothian level which in turn will be crucial in enabling the creation of the low carbon locally resilient future which we are working for.

Incredibly Edible Dunbar and District!

Our recent community mapping survey findings clearly tell us that people do want to be able to grow, buy and eat locally grown and produced food. If you are interested in turning Dunbar and District into an incredibly edible place to live come on out Friday June 4th at 7pm to 27 High Street Pot Luck. A Sustainable Landscape

You are invited to a presentation on Friday afternoon, 14th May, 2-4pm at Hallhill Healthy Living Centre.

The presentation will be given by landscape architecture students from Edinburgh College of Art who will be presenting their strategies for making sustainable use of the landscape in the Dunbar/East Linton area.

These strategies have been arrived at from their study of the geology, soils, topography, history, current land use, biodiversity, industry, transport links etc. in this area and will focus particularly on their research into renewable energy, enhancing biodiversity and sustainable recreation and tourism.

If promises to be an interesting series of presentations which should provide plenty of ideas to feed into our vision for a low-carbon, locally resilient future.

What works in Behaviour Change?

We were recently invited to submit abstracts of papers for presenting at a conference ‘What works in Behaviour Change?’ which is being organised by the Scottish Government at the end of June. Based on the results of our recent research for the ‘2025′ project and the projects started by our working groups, we have submitted four abstracts about food, transport, energy and a more general one highlighting that, actually, people do already want to make many of the changes which will be required as we move to a low carbon, locally resilient future but are facing many real (and perceived) barriers to change. The major barrier however remains the perverse incentives not to change which result from our current economic system, relying as it does on continuous economic growth and unsustainable consumption.

As it happens, the organisers have now responded and only asked us to present a short session based on the food abstract but we will work some of the more general findings into this.

Dunbar Community Wind Turbine

Sustaining Dunbar is hoping to help set up community owned and run wind turbines! We are meeting on 22nd April, at 7.30pm, in the BeGreen shop in the West Port, to see who is interested and begin this work – see you there!As well as producing carbon-free electricity, turbines can generate significant amounts of money to re-invest in the local community. A typical small-scale (250kW) turbine can generate around £100,000 per year. The income from one or more of these turbines would have a significant impact on the local economy, helping Dunbar become even more vibrant and sustainable and giving the local community control over its own income stream.
There is a wide range of private and public support available to help us buy and install these turbines through sources such as Community Energy Scotland. To make this happen several practical steps need to be taken such as identifying potential sites, getting wider community support, engaging with local planning issues, investigating the most suitable ways to finance and own these turbines, and creating a re-investment plan which will ensure community engagement.
So, as ever, we need your help! We want to establish a working group where people can develop the overall plan of attack and help deliver agreed work streams within this. Whether your interest is in raising the project’s profile locally, investigating potential community investments, business/financial planning, grant applications, company structures or whatever, your help would very much appreciated. You are invited to an open meeting in Dunbar Primary School Hall April 26th or West Barns Primary School Hall April 27th. Come along and have your say about what you want your area to be like by 2025! All ages welcome.

The 2025 Mapping and Action Planning Project Team is out and about gathering your views and ideas regarding: home energy efficiency, accessibility to local food, public transport and employment. The meeting will start at 7:30. We will feedback the local survey findings so far and enable you to record your views and ideas for making your area an even better place to live in by 2025.
